MGS V floors the world during its first hours thanks to solid technique and balanced, smooth gameplay. Then excitement falls back as the repetitive missions and narrative pacing put the player's patience to the test. It must be said that in practice, there proves to be a gap between MGS V and the finest open worlds crafted in the West. The series' latest feels like a first try, rather than the masterstrokes we've been used to from Kojima. Recycling the same effects to the point of absurdity, The Phantom Pain is likely not the apotheosis awaited by fans, but it remains a game of great authenticity, with an identity all its own, and which looks like no other.
