It seems hard to believe that we're already only one week away from Defiance's first season finale. Time flies when SyFy decides to show some actual science fiction programming, I suppose. "Past is Prologue" was pretty typical penultimate episode fare in that it escalated various conflicts without really resolving anything. But despite some quirks here and there, it succeeded in its task of building tension and setting the stage for next week's big showdown.
The mayoral election took center stage this week as Datak Tarr went into full offensive mode against acting Mayor Rosewater. Despite having orchestrated events so that he emerged as the savior of Defiance in "If I Ever Leave This World Alive," Datak was still very much the unlikely underdog as this episode opened. And if we've learned anything about the character over the past few months, it's that he has no shortage of dirty schemes and willing minions to put him on top. He was certainly true to form this week. Predictably, his assassination attempt on Amanda turned out to be something less overtly sinister but still very damaging to her credibility. And like any good politician, he played on the town's collective fears - the fear of outside invaders, the fear of nuclear meltdown, the fear of what happens without big government there to keep the demons away. In that sense, this episode hammered home the notion that life hasn't changed so much from a pre-Pale Wars America.
